My Frustration With The Animation Community
IntroductionBefore I start let me just clarify a few things. First, I don't think EVERYONE who is part of the Animation Community is bad; back when I was on Twitter, I made a lot of friends there and I'm still friends with them via other social media platforms. This is more targeted towards the VERY big figures in the Animation Community. Second, I chose the term "frustrated" because I'm more annoyed with these people and don't downright hate most of these people. Lastly, I will not be dropping any names because I want to keep things classy here. With that being said let's get into this. So about a year ago, I chose to leave Twitter, and let me tell you it was one of the best choices I made! It was hard because I gained a fair following and made some friends who shared my interests, but it was addicting and interfered with my life, and let's just say I clashed with some not so nice people. I bring this up because back, when I was on Twitter, was part of the animation community and I followed a lot of big figures in this community. After I left for a short period time, I still followed these figures on other social media platforms but then I found myself unfollowing them, not because I think they're terrible, but because there were some things about them that REALLY irritated me. What might these things you might ask? Well... The Animation Community Feels HomogenizedNow I have nothing wrong with people going with the consensus. HOWEVER, most of the big figures in animation all say the same thing: they all praise what’s popular and bash what's unpopular. Hardly anyone speaks against the consensus. I have friends who I met thanks to Twitter but they are willing to speak against the consensus for movies and shows which is one of the reasons I’m still friends with them. The Animation Community Is Extremely BiasedI get it, we all have our preferences. But when I rate something I try to be as unbiased as possible. My issue is that a lot of the big figures seem to have a prejudice against certain animations and studios as they are always rating stuff by some studios higher than others. Like there will be people who favor Pixar and Disney more than DreamWorks and vice versa. Or studios like Illumination will be frowned upon. Truth is every studio has its ups and downs, so there is no reason to have a bias. Now we are about to get into the biggest issue I have with The Animation Community, as it is my biggest annoyance and why I'm glad to be done with this community. Get ready because it's going to be longer these last two points.,The Animation Community Focus Heavily On Whatever Is Trending and PopularNow let me just say, there is nothing wrong with talking about popular movies, shows, or whatever is trending. What bothers me, is that the majority of the big figures of the Animation Community are talking about just that. How about showing more support for indie animation (beyond Helluva Boss and Glitch Productions- not that I have problem with them mind you) and bring more attention to stuff that didn't receive much promotion, I thought you people were all about supporting the medium? Like back when I was on Twitter, I discovered the web series Dinosauria (really good by the way) because fellow dinosaur enthusiasts showed promotion for the series and NOT from the Animation Community. ,I saw NO ONE taking the time to put a spotlight on the teaser for Talon (looks promising by the way).,Same with the show My Dad The Bounty Hunter a show that hardly received ANY promotion from Netflix (great show, if you have some spare time go ahead and watch it). ,There is hardly any talk about flops that deserve more attention, old shows that got screwed over by the network, cult films and shows, and international animation (besides Cartoon Saloon and Studio Ghibli). I mean China has this whole new have of animated movies and shows coming out, why are these people not talking about them? Also, there is little talk about adult animation. Like I saw little talk about series like The Legend of Vox Machina, Invincible, and Castlevania or movies like Mad God, and The House. You people want to break the stigma that animation is just for kids, so why not talk about stuff beyond trending and popular kids shows? Now one could make the argument they are talking about the popular stuff to gain traction and I get that. EXCEPT people SaberSpark reviews all kinds of things from international and indie which is why I still follow him.,People like Steve Reviews while not as big has gained a fair following by reviewing all kinds of spectrums of animation and not just what’s hip and trending. ,Heck, Jorge R. Gutierrez the man behind works such as El Tigre, Book of Life, and Maya and The Three takes the time to put a spotlight on animations that deserve more attention on his social media. I watched Oni: Thunder God's Tale after I saw him recommend it on Instagram and ended up loving it.,But you want to know what the worst part about all of this is? These people just talk about whatever kids movie or show is trending and popular then have the AUDACITY to complain about animation not getting the respect it deserves. 😑,,,,,Well MAYBE, you could use your massive following to put a spotlight on these animations that are hardly getting any attention or promotion, but NO! Instead of showing support for animation that really needs it, you are focused on posting what will get you the most views, likes, and retweets! Conclusion So That's My Frustration with the Animation Community. What do you think? Let me know! And to end it, here's a song that reflects me leaving that community behind.,
